The Caribbean Open Institute (COI) is a regional coalition of individuals and organizations that promotes open development approaches to inclusion, participation and innovation within the Caribbean, using open data as a catalyst. Our focus is on: Advocacy, awareness, and engagement with public sector stakeholders on Open Government and Open Data; Evidence of the potential impacts of Open Data initiatives through demand-side research initiatives in various thematic sectors; Capacity building in data literacy, competence and application as an essential component of Caribbean development

2 Caribbean projects win the 2017 FRIDA Regional Fund for Digital Innovation

The FRIDA 2017 edition announced three innovative initiatives designed to address different educational and environmental challenges in the LAC region. Winner  in the program's most technical category was a project by the National Telecommunications Commission of Dominica for building weather stations in local schools and developing a web platform with freely available meteorological data.

The workshop, “Towards a Caribbean Open Institute: Data, Communications and Impact”, was hosted by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), June 30 – July 1, 2010 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Jamaica. It brought together international experts and stakeholders in the Caribbean to explore opportunities for strengthening policy-oriented research in the region.

Since its inception in 2011, the Developing the Caribbean Conference & Code Sprint has grown to become the Caribbean’s marquee platform for discussing open data, digital governance and innovation for addressing development issues. For the 2016 event, we choose the theme “Towards A Caribbean Data Revolution”, in response to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call for a “data revolution” to drive the global development community towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
